Dara qualified as a Postural Stability Instructor in 2016 and this allows her to work with frailer older people with a history of falls in the community. She conducts falls prevention exercise classes or in house exercise depending on the patient requirements.
What is the Exercise Protocol?
The exercises are based on the FaME and Otago exercises, both of which reduce falls significantly.
The Prevention of Falls qualification (PSI) is the first and only, evidence‐ based, accredited and endorsed falls prevention qualification. Its development, funded by the Department of Health, involved a National Advisory Group of experts. There are over 2000 qualified PSIs in the UK and Ireland, working within the Falls Prevention services and self-employed. 54% of falls exercise services have a PSI qualified instructor working in the team. The course (incl. Assessment) uses a blended learning approach of face to face and an online training portal to teach students to apply knowledge, through problem solving, to the practice of delivering, progressing and tailoring the 7 evidenced based components of the Falls Management Exercise (FaME).
